노리치 대성당 - Norwich Cathedral

사랑하는 엄마 아빠,

오늘은 내가 조깅 가는길에 항상 보는 노리치 대성당에 대해서 간략히 이야기 해 볼께.

I would like to talk about the history and significance of Norwich Cathedral.

Simple facts - It is over 900 years old and was built over 50 years from 1096 to 1145.

이 성당은 900년의 역사를 가지고 있는 노르만 건축물이야. 1096년에 시작해서 1145년에 완공이 되었으니 장장 50년의 건축기간을 거쳐서 태어났어. 당시에 유럽에서 가장 큰 교회중 하나였다고 해. 이 교회는 성당이면서 동시에 베네딕토회 수도 분원이라는 점에서(구체적으로 말하자면, 교황 뿐만 아니라 소수도원의 원장과 성직자들에 의해 운영이 된다) 특이한 영국식 분위기를 자아낸다고 그러네.

At the time of its consecration, Norwich Cathedral was one of the great buildings of the era. With construction beginning in 1096 and finishing c.1145, it was amongst the largest major churches in Europe. The Norman building was an example of that uniquely English phenomenon: a cathedral that was also a Benedictine priory – the bishop’s seat but run by the prior and his monks.

 노리치 대성당의 건축적 중요성은 로마네스크 양식 건물 원형의 규모와 오랜 세월을 거치면서도 보존이 잘 되어있다는 점에 있다고 해. 손상된 부분도 있지만, 둥근 천장이라든지 뾰족탑 같은 고딕양식의 특징이 장식되었다고 해.

The immense architectural importance of the Cathedral today rests chiefly on the scale of the original Romanesque building and the completeness of its survival.

Losses have been few, and later embellishments include Gothic features such as the high vaults and the spire.

어떤 이들은 이렇게 유서깊은 건물이 아직도 예배하는데 사용되고 있어서 말이 안된다고도 하지만, 그냥 방문객만 받는 텅빈 성당이기보다는 현대와 교감하는 대성당으로서의 역할을 하는 것을 더 좋다고 생각해.

Some say that such building with historical and architectural significance should not be used for worship services and various activities and instead should be kept quiet and left usused. But I think that it is important that this living history interact with people every day.

 날씨 좋은 날에 노리치는 혼자 보기 정말 아까워. 한국 대도시에서 찾아 보기 힘든 오래된 나무들을 여기 노리치에서는  등산 가지 않아도 여기저기서 볼수 있어. 엄마 아빠가 여기 오면 꼭 날씨 좋을 때 같이 산책하면서 여기 저기 보여 주고 싶어.

I can't say I know every inch of South Korea. But in my limited knowledge, it is hard to spot beautiful and old trees on the street in the big cities unless one goes to mountains. When I saw these beautiful trees standing just past the cathedral buildings I had to stop to appreciate their majestic beauty.

이 날 운이 좋았던거 같아. 걸어서 저 나무들을 지나가는데 사진사 같은 사람이 우뚝 서서 고민을 막 하더니 사진을 찰칵찰칵 찍는거야. 그래서 그 사람이 가기를 조금 기다렸다가 나도 똑같은 자리에서서 아래 사진 찍었어. 이쁘지?

I was quite lucky on the day I took this photo. I was only walking by the two trees and spotted a guy with a big camera with a very serious attitude deep in his own thoughts for a while and he started to take pics. So I assumed he was a professional photographer. I waited till he was gone and stood on the same place as he was standing and took this picture. Isn't it lovely? On a sunny day, Norwich is so beautiful that it is a waste to be seeing it alone. 

 아래 길 끝이 노리치 대성당을 빠져나가는 문이야. 이리로 가면 마치 무지개 끝의 금항아리로 연결될거 같은 느낌이 들어 기분이 좋아.

The end of the path is the gate to leave the premises of the Cathedral. It feels like this path will lead me to a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. I love this path!

이 길을 지나면 호수 위로 조그만 다리가 나오고 그 주위로 아래와 같은 경관이 경쾌하게 펼쳐져.

After I come out of the Cathedral premises, I go on a foot bridge over River Wensum and see cheerful scenaries like below.

그 다리를 지나면 아담과 이브라고 하는 노리치에서 가장 오래된 호프집이 보여. 이름을 봐도 건물을 봐도 왠지 태초부터 있었을 것 같은 분위기 이지 않어? 간판도 재미있게 생겼지? 여기 지날때 마다 들어가서 술한잔 하고 싶은데 꾹 참고 있어. 언젠가는 들어가서 마셔보고 싶다..이왕이면 엄마 아빠랑 같이 날씨 좋을때 말이야. ㅋ

Past the mini bridge is a pub called 'Adam and Eve' which is the oldest pub in Norwich. This is the biggest barrier which tempts me every time on my way to the gym. I just want to stop for a nice pint of Ale. Sadly, I have not been in it yet but I would like to very soon. It will be very pleasant to sit out when the sun is out. I like the way the pub sign is done.

사랑하는 엄마 아빠,

나 지금도 열심히 운동 하고 있어. 여기 와서 처음으로 한게 바로 피트니스 센터로 가서 6개월 등록한거야. 운동하러 가는 길이 너무 예뻐서 몇컷 찍어 봤어.

The first thing I did when I got here in Norwich was to register at a gym near Cereal House(name of my parents in law's house). It takes about 10 mins to get there on foot and the route is so pretty especially when the sun is out and shining above my head.

여기를 지나서 피트니스 센터로 가는데, 노리치 대성당(Norwich Cathedral) 이야. 다음에 내부 사진도 같이 올리께. 저 뽀족한 탑부분에 나선형 계단이 꼭대기 까지 이어져 있어. 이 꼭대기 외부에 희귀한 송골매들이 둥지틀고 살고 있고 요즘은 알 낳아서 지금 사람들이 와서 망원경으로 매일 같이 지켜보고 있어. 송골매는 법으로 보호받는 새라고 하네. 얼마전에 다른 새가 이 알들을 공격해서 지방 신문에 까지 떠들썩하게 기사로 나고있어.

I pass by this beautiful Norwich Cathedral to go to my gym. (I will upload more pics with its history later.) In the tower are spiral steps leading to the top and visits to the tower is quite controlled so one has to look up when it is allowed to visit to tower part. There are a couple of peregrine falcons nesting out on the spire platform at the moment and there has been a blue tent set up to watch their eggs since last week. This has been on the local newspaper as their eggs were attacked by another bird. (Pregrine falcons are protected by law.) 

요즘 날씨가 좋아서 하늘이 너무 이뻐. 눈을 들고 하늘을 보면 저렇게 대성당 뽀족탑과 나무가 예쁘게 보여.

Weather has been blessed and this is what I see when I look up. So beautiful!

This is the bottom right part of the Cathedral. Thought this has rather different appearance compared to Korean temples.

축구팬들을 제외한 한국인들에게 Norwich City 는 생소한 영국 지명 일것 같애. 그래서 노리치의 관광 명소들 혹은 유명한 사람이나 이름들을 잠시만 소개 할게. 

Except for some frantic Korean football fans, Norwich is a mystery for most Koreans. So I would like to introduce a little bit more about Norwich filtered through my own eyes, experiences, and limited knowledge. You may see some random comments here and there but that is because I find them very interesting and they are not necessarily outstanding features of Norwich.

먼저, 서두에서 언급했듯이 노리치를 연고로 하고 있는 Norwich City FC (Football Club) 으로 유명해. 영국인에도 우리나라처럼 축구팬들이 많거든. 수많은 축구 선수들과 그들의 이력을 잘 알고 나름의 지식을 바탕으로 논쟁 할 수 있는 이들이 꽤나 많고, 필자가 과거 런던에서 모 선사에서 일할때도 직장내 축구팬들이 많았던 것으로 기억해. 일과를 마치고 가끔씩 펍(pub: 호프집 개념)으로 가서 술 한잔씩 할때면 남자들 사이에 빠지지 않는 주제가 축구였던게 기억나. 이 주제가 선상에 떠오르면 흥분에 들떠 이야기 하던 직장 동료들이 떠오르는거 있지. 아래가 노리지 씨티 배지야. 최근 부진한 성적으로 지난 4월 8일 크리스 휴튼 감독을 경질하고 닐 애덤스에게 지휘봉이 넘어갔으나 그 효과를 아직은 보지 못하고 있다고 하네. 축구팬이 아닌 필자도 관심을 어느정도 가지게 될 정도로 이곳의 축구애는 대단한거 같어. 

Norwich is the hometown for Norwich City FC(Football Club). Just like Korea, there are many soccer fans in the UK. When I worked for a shipping liner in London 3~4 years back, I remember my colleagues talking about soccer players and teams with so much passion especially after having a few good pints at a pub after work. Below is Norwich City badge. Sadly, the team is not doing so well at the moment that they sacked Chris Hughton(former coach) for the team's erratic season performance and hired Neil Adams who has not proved his excellence as a competent coach yet. Good luck Norwich City FC!

다음으로,  성당,성,교회가 많은 곳으로 알려져 있다고 해. 나도 여기 저기 산책다니면서 교회들이 눈에 많이 띈다고 생각했어. 사진은 내가 직접 찍은 아가들로 추후에 올리도록 할게.

The city is also famous for its churches and castles. When I go for walks, I noticed them quite a lot around the city and they add great characters to the city I believe. I will upload more pics later for your viewing.

좀 엉뚱하긴 하지만, 콜맨 머스타드 기억나? 노리지는 이 머스타드의 고향이기도 해. 내가 전에 하나 사다 줬었는데 맛있게 잘 드시고 있나 모르겠네(아래 사진 첫번째). 이것 뿐만 아니라 내가 좋아하는 감자칩도 노리치에서 시작 되었는데 케틀칩(Kettle Chip)이라고 불려(아래 사진 두번째). 요 과자도 다음에 한국 들어갈때 사다 줄게~

I can't leave out Colman's mustard when talking about Norwich. The company started in Norwich and I somehow love the fact that Colman is from here. FYI, I like mustard but it is not like I would die without it. But as we all have strange and unexplanable obsessions for or interest in certain things, so do I.

There are a good variety of potato chips in Korea but it is hard to find good ones. Kettle chips are everything I have dreamt about chips. These babies are chunky, perfectly fried and properly seasoned. I believe if there is heaven for potato chips it will be the Kettle Chip factories.

이런 맛나는 음식 이외에도 자연 경관, 쇼핑, 교육, 문화 등에서도 여러모로 뛰어난 도시 인것 같애.

앞으로 이렇게 다양한 노리치 생활에 대해서 내가 조금씩 알아가듯이 엄마 아빠에게도 조금씩 보여 줄게.

Anyway, Norwich City has so much more to offer in terms of nature, shopping, education, and cultures and I will gradually familiarize you with this lovely city.

먼저 노리치(Norwich)는 어디일까? (Where is Norwich?)

위치(Location): 아래 영국 지도에서 오른쪽 하단에 노란 점으로 표시해 놓은 부분이야. It is located on the yellow dot on the map below.

약간의 역사 이야기(A little bit of history of Norwich): 노리치는 16세기에 영국에서 런던에 이어 두번째로 큰 도시였고, 산업혁명 시절 까지도 브리스톨과 제2의 도시 자리를 두고 경쟁하였다고 해.  Norwich was once the second largest city after London for most of the medieval period up until the industrial revolution. It was competing against Bristol to be the second largest city up until the industrial revolution era according to my beloved Wikipedia.

인구(Population): 노리치(Norwich)는 도시(city)로  영국 잉글랜드의 이스트앵글리아(East Anglia)의 노퍽(Norfolk)이라는 주의 주도(capital city) 임당 . 인구 13만명(2008, 위키피디아) 에 면적은 39㎢ 이라고 해. Norwich is the capital city of Norfolk, East Anglia with a population of 130,000 (2008, Wikipedia) covering an area of 39㎢.

부산인구가 356만명(2013년, 위키피디아) 에 면적 768.41 ㎢ 이므로, 노리치에는 1㎢ 당 3,333 명이 부산은 같은 면적에 4,637명이 살고 있어. 고향 부산도 역시 인구 밀도가 높네. 참고로 서울은 1㎢ 당 17,473명(2010년, 위키피디아)이 살고 있다네요. To make a simple population comparison between my hometown, Busan and my second hometown, Norwich: Busan has a population of approx. 3,560,000 in an area of 768.41 ㎢. Therefore the density of population is 3,333 people per 1㎢ for Norwich and 4,637 people for Busan which shows that Busan is much more crowded than Norwich. FYI - the density of population is approx. 17,473 people per 1㎢ for Seoul and 5,285 people per 1㎢  for London. You think London is crowded? You are mistaken!
