영국 노리치 하늘(Norwich Gal)

사랑하는 엄마 아빠, 

나는 별로 한 것도 없지만 결혼식 치르고 나니까 너무 피곤하더라. 그래서 크리스랑 별장에 며칠 쉬러 갔어. 

We decided to go away for a few days after the wedding to my parents in law's cottage in Wells-next-the-sea.

도착한 날 날씨가 좋아서 홀큼 공원으로 향했어. 

It was sunny and hot on the day we arrived there so we went for a long walk to Holkham Hall.

다른 사람들도 같은 생각 이었나봐. 사람들이 많이 있더라구. I guess others thought the same. 

탁 트인 공간을 보면 마음에 왠지모를 평화가 오는거 같어. Somehow open space brings me some kind of peace in mind. 

홀큼영지에 있는 카페 입구야. 행사때 사용될 법한 마차가 세워져 있더라구. 이런 날씨에도 잘 어울리고 이 자리에도 너무 잘 어울리는거 같어.

There was this red wagon which I think is used for events. It goes so well with this kind of weather in this specific spot of the cafe.

따뜻한 햇살을 즐기는 사람들. People enjoying the sunshine.

카페에 들어가서 뭐 먹을까 고민을 많이 했어. 간단하고 가볍게 먹을거라고 이미 정했지만 맛있는거 보니까 다 먹고 싶더라구. 

We were in agony to decide what to eat!  Although we knew we would have something simple to share seeing tasty things made it very difficult for us to stay determined. 

달달한걸 먹을지...Should we eat something sweet?

끼니가 될만한걸 먹을까? Something savory with soup? 

소세지도 있고..각종 파이들도 있고.. There were tasty sausages, rolls, and pies..

그냥 원래 대로 간단히 먹기로 했어. 크림 티(Cream Tea) 라고 스콘과 크림 그리고 차한잔. 

We decided to stick to our plan and share a Cream Tea set.

첫날은 날씨가 넘 좋아서 자전거 타고 홀큼 공원을 한바퀴 돌았어. 반나절 일정 잡고 가니깐 딱 좋더라구. 

It was sunny and lovely there so we decided to hire bikes for two hours to cycle around Holkham Hall.

참, 아래 건물 중앙 왼쪽 하단에 보면 창문 하나가 막혀있지? 재미있는 역사, 옛날에(정확한 시기는 모르겠고), 집의 창문의 숫자에 따라 세금을 징수한 적이 있어서 세금 덜 낼려구 저렇게 창문을 막아 버린 집들이 간혹 보인다고 하네.

Oh, interesting piece of history - do you see a window on the bottom left is blocked? I am not sure exactly which period this happened, but they used to impose tax on houses based on the number of windows. So some people blocked some of their windows to pay less tax. 

어쨋든, 차한잔 하고 자전거를 빌려서 벽으로 나뉘어진 정원(Walled Garden) 으로 향했어.

Anyway, after a cuppa we headed to Walled Garden.

지금 공사 중이라 조금 허전한 느낌은 들더라. 

It was under construction so it looked a bit bare.

지도에서 보다시피 벽으로 정원이 나뉘어져 있어서 이름이 '벽으로 나뉘어진 정원' 이야. 

As lots are parted by walls, it is called "Walled Garden".

예쁜 꽃들을 보니 마음이 정화 되는듯.. Seeing beautiful flowers purified my mind..only for a bit!

여기는 포도밭. 지금은 황량하지만 2년 정도 후면 포도덩굴이 자라나서 포도밭 처럼 보일거래. 

Vineyard. This looks bare now but it will grow to be a proper vineyard in a couple of years.

정원을 간단히 구경하고 다시 나와서 자전거에 올라 탔어. 멀리서 보이는 홀큼홀이 나에게 오라고 손짓 하는거 같았어. 

We got back on our bikes to go back toward Holkham Hall and it felt like the hall in the distance was waving at me to come!

다시 돌아 왔어. 

자전거를 돌려주고, 나가는 길을 찾다가..개선문 같은 곳을 지났어. 

After returning the bikes, we started making our way back out the park and approached a gate which resembled triumphal arch(maybe only in my mind). 

기이하게 생긴 나무들도 지나고..이상한 동물들 울음소리가 들리기 시작해서 무서워 지기 시작하더라구. 길을 잃은데다가 어두워 지기 시작했거든.

We passed these odd looking trees and heard some unknown animals screaming/ crying nearby. I was getting a bit anxious as it looked like we were lost and we did not know and it was getting dark.  

등골이 오싹한 시간들이 지나서 겨우 외부로 통하는 출구를 찾았고..높은 담장을 넘어서 겨우 탈출 성공! 굉장한 모험을 한것 같아 나름 재미 있었던 것 같어. 

It gives me the shivers when I think about it but I must admit it was somewhat adventurous and having to climb over a fence was the climax of it all. 

4일 정도 별장에 있었는데 나머지 날들은 그냥 쌀쌀하고 비도 좀 오고 해서 푸욱 쉬다가 왔어~. 

The rest of our stay there involved lots of cooking and rain. So we stayed in the house a lot which was still very nice.

커피를 너무 사랑하는 일인으로서 좋은 커피숍을 찾으면 꼭 알리고 싶어져. '리틀 레드 로스터' 라는 커피숍인데 체인이 아니라 독자적인 커피숍이야. 그래서 더 사랑하지. 사실 나는 커피 체인들을 별로 안좋아 하거든. 너무 스탠다드한 커피 맛이 지리하다고나 할까..

As a coffee lover, when I find a great coffee shop, I have to let the world know. 

I would like to introduce The Little Red Roaster today. It is independent and this is why I like it even more. I am not a big fan of coffee chains because they make very standard and uninteresting coffee. Sorry if coffee chain lovers are reading this but I mean no offence.

이 커피숍은 얼마전에 지방 신문에 났는데 그 이유가 웃겨. 전화 받으면서 커피 주문 하는 손님을 거부 했거든! 용감하지 않아? 그들의 철학에 한표와 박수를 보냈어. ㅋ 

This coffee shop was on local newspaper because they denied to serve a customer who was ordering coffee while talking on the phone. I like the attitude and their philosophy! Way to go!

가게 자체는 굉장히 작고 귀여워. 여긴 우리 집 근처에 최근에 오픈한 3번째 샵이래. 여기 단골 될거 같다.

The shop is petite and cute. This one opened near Cereal House and I think I will be a frequent customer here.

플랫 화이트 시켰어. My flat white - so silky and smooth! You can tell from the color how fresh and tast this was!

케익도 맛있게 잘하드라구. 케익위에 하얀거는 화이트 초컬릿이야. 

They do wonderful cakes as well. The white bit on top is white chocolate. Yum!

창밖으로 보인 광경이야.

There are three of these in Norwich and I hope these guys do well and better in the

며칠 전에 장보러 갔다가 오늘 길에 길거리에 세워져있는 쿨한 차량을 보고 한눈에 반해서 사진을 찍었어. 정말 트랜스포머 같이 생겼지?

I saw this vehicle parked in front of an Indian restaurant on my way home from shopping. It looks like a transformer, doesn't it?

너무 예쁘다. 금방 이라도 일어나서 로봇으로 변신할거 같어. 나 한대 사주면 안되까?

So cool! It looks like it will transform into a robot right away. Can anyone buy me one of these?

이 주 정도 너무 잠잠 했었지? 런던 다녀왔다가 컴퓨터에도 문제가 있었고 나도 게을러 져서 시간이 이렇게 흘러 버렸네. 

Sorry for not having been uploading for the past two weeks. I had some issues with my computer and been also lazy as well. Where has my time gone?!?

4월 중순에 Ranworth Broad(란워스 브로드) 에 갔었는데 그때 찍은 사진들이야. 

란워스 브로드는 노퍽(Norfolk)주에 있는 뷰어강의 골짜기에 있는 광활하게 펼쳐져 있는 습지대를 일컫는 용어야. 중세시대 토탄공사의 범람으로인해 브로즈가 형성 되어었다고 여겨진다고 해.

We went to Ranworth Broad in April which is an expanse of water lying in the valley of the River Bure in Norfolk, England. Like other broads, it is believed to have been formed by the flooding of medieval peat workings. Joined to neighbouring Malthouse Broad by a narrow channel, it is one of the nature reserves in the care of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. 

참고로 브로즈(Broads) 는 영국 잉글랜드 동쪽 끝에 있는 습지대로 국립공원과 같은 수준의 특별 보호를 받는다.노퍽(Norfolk)과 서퍽(Suffolk)에 걸쳐 있는데 대부분의 지역이 노퍽에 포함되어 노퍽브로즈(Norfolk Broads)라고도 한다. 총면적 303km²로 특별 보호를 받는 습지대로는 영국에서 가장 규모가 크다. ‘브로즈’란 이 일대의 호수를 가리키는 말이다. 습지대 내에 7개의 강과 63개의 호수가 있다. 호수는 작은 연못 크기부터 면적이 5.9km²에 달하는 히클링호(Hickling Broad)까지 크기가 다양하다. 

 일단 란워스 브로드로 가기 전에 잠시 퍼앤 페더스 라는 술집에 들러서 간단한 점심과 맥주 한잔했어. 술집앞에 작은 연못이 있어서 찍어 봤어. 

Before Ranworth Broad, we stopped by a pub called Fur & Feathers for a spot of lunch and a drink. There was a petite pond at the entrance.

다양한 맥주가 구비되어 있어. 나는 FLAGONDRY 를 마셨어. There was a wide range of ales at the pub. I think I had half a pint of Flagondry which was scrummy.

점심 맛있게 먹고, 차에 다시 올라타서 아래와 같은 작은 시골 도로위를 운전했어.

After the lovely lunch, we got back in the car and drove on the rural road.

브로드에 도착해서 이제 입구쪽으로 걸어 가는길이야. We finally arrived and are walking to the entrance of the Broad.

나무 판자위를 걸어 습지를 가로질렀어. We walked across the marches on board walk.

습지에 노랗게 예쁘게 꽃이 피어있네. I spotted little yellow flowers on the damp.

물가로 도착해서 경치 구경 한번 하고, We arrived by the water and stood there enjoying the view of expanse of water.

다시 걸어서 돌아왔어. We walked back past this beautiful tree.

백조하고 청둥오리가 평화롭게 일광욕 하는걸 보고 가까이 가서 한컷 찍어 봤어. I was so happy to see those swans and mullard ducks sunbathing. 

 오리들이 내가 사진 찍는걸 알았는지 이렇게 예쁘게 포즈까지 취해주더라.

차로 걸어가는 본 예쁜 광경이야. Just a pretty sight!

성 헬렌 교회 건물을 들어가서 구경했어. We visited St. Helen's Church.

뾰족한 목조 뼈대의 내부 천정 스테인드 글라스 그리고 제단부분과 다른 부분을 가르는 칸막이가 인상적이었어. 나무로 된 제단 칸막이에 12사제 상이 그려져 있는거 보이지? 이 칸막이가 종교개혁 시 우상파괴를 살아남은 최고의 중세 칸막이중 하나라고 하네. 15세기 정도에 만들어 졌다고 추정되고 있어.    

The wooden frame of spire ceiling, stained glass, and rood screen were the impressive features of this church. Can you see the 12 apostles on the rood screen? It is known to be one of the finest examples of medieval roof screen to have survived the iconoclasm of English Reformation. It is thought to have been erected sometime in the 15th century.

란워스 성가 책인데 15세기에 만들어진 진품이야. 아직도 이렇게 보존이 잘되고 있어. This is Ranworth Antiphoner which was made in the 15th century and it has remained intact. 

나오는 길에 방명록에 한글로 나의 자취를 남겼어. I had to leave my trace in Korean on the guest book on my way out!

드디어 우리 휴가의 마지막 날이네. 오늘은 시부모님들이 이쪽으로 오셔서 크로머라는 해변지역으로 드라이브 가서 같이 시간 보내고 집으로 돌아 가기로했어.

It is our last day of our break. My parents in law came to spend the day with us and drove us to Cromer for a lovely walk along the coast and tasty food.

크로머는 몇세기 전에는 내륙지방이었는데 시간이 지나면서 자연적인 요인으로 깍이고 깍여서 해안선에 위치한 마을이 된거래. 1880년 경에 이 마을은 해안가에 위치하게 되었고 철도가 들어서면서 빅토리아 시대와 에드워드 7세 시대에 인기있는 여행지로 손꼽히게 되었다고 그래. 이때에 해안 지구에 웅장한 호텔들과 기품있는 부두가 지어진거래. 먹거리로는 해안가 백악초에서 천천히 자라서 부드럽고 달콤한 '크로머 게'로 유명해.

Cromer was actually long way inland centuries ago natural elements relentlessly shaped and changed it to be what it is now. By the 1880s the town was on the coast and with the advent of railways, it became a fashionable attraction for the Victorians and then Edwardians, who built a string of grand hotels on the seafront and a magnificent pier. Cromer is famous for the eponymous and world-famous Cromer Crab – a fresh brown crab. The reason Cromer's crabs are so tender and sweet is that they grow slowly on the chalk reef just off the coast.

드디어 점심 먹을 레스토랑인 레드 라이언에 도착했어. 레드라이언은 체인은 아닌데 레스토랑들이 좋아하는 이름이야.

We finally arrived at Red Lion which is an independent restaurant whose name is popular for restaurants.

나는 어니언링과 포테이토칩을 곁들인 비프 햄버거를 주문했어.

I ordered a beef burger with onion rings and potato chips. It was really good but why did I order a burger at a seaside restaurant? Error!!

나머지 식구들은 다 같이 나눠 먹을수 있게 해산물 플래터를 시켰어. 연어, 튀긴 생선, 새우 등과 함께 빵과 샐러드가 곁들여 져서 나왔어.

The rest of the family wisely chose to order a fish platter to share which had salmon, fried fish, shrimps, some bread and veggies. 

정말 맛있게 먹고 ..다 먹어 치우고..집에갔어. 5일동안의 재미있는 여행이었어. 시부모님들 덕택에 더 재미있고 맛있는 여행을 한 것 같네. 엄마 아빠 즐거운 하루 보내시구요 사랑합니당~

Lunch was delicious and we had such a great 5 day break.

Extra extra thanks to my wonderful parents-in-law for making our trip more exciting and eventful.

어제는 여기 노리치에서 개최된 드래곤 홀이라는 연회장에서 개최된 맥주 축제에 갔어. 노리치에서 일년에 8~10개 정도의 크고작은 맥주 축제가 열린데. 그중에서도 10월에 개최되는 에일 축제가 가장 크고 줄을 한두시간 정도 서야 들어 갈수있을 정도라고 하네. 이번 맥주 축제는 그나마 소규모 라고 해. 이번에는 팻캣리라는 노리치 소재의 양조장에서 스폰서를 해서 개최가 되었어. 독립 양조자들이 만듵 에일들이 소개 되고 참석한 손님들이 점수를 메길 수도 있는 자리야. 대기업들이 아닌 중소기업들을 장려해 주는 자리라서 한 층 더 뜻깊은 것 같아.

We went to a beer festival held at Dragon Hall in Norwich from the 25th~27th April. It seems that there are about 8~10 beer/ale festivals of various scale held in Norwich each year. Dragon Hall beer festival was sponsored by Fat Cat Brewery in Norwich. The brewers attending this event are mostly Norwich based and independent. It is good to see the community support independent breweries. The visitors pay a small amount of money to get in.

오후 5시~7시까지 노리치와 맨유 축구 경기가 있어서 그거 보고 4대 0이라는 대패의 쓴맛을 뒤로하고

드래곤 홀로 향했어. 도착해서 보니 줄이 길게 바깥으로 나와있는거야. 이번 행사가 인기가 많아서 줄을 서고 있고 들어갈수 있는 사람의 수가 법적으로 한정이 되어 있고 이미 내부가 꽉 차서 우리는 줄에서 기다려야 했어. 45분 정도 기다려서야 들어 갈수 있게 되었어.

There was a football match between Norwich FC and Manchester United from 5pm to 7pm so we watched it at home - to be precise, the men in this house watched it and saw Norwich FC beaten 4-0 by Manchester United. Poor Norwich FC! There are in a big trouble. Anyway, after the match we walked to Dragon Hall and found a queue out the entrance and it was cold! There is a regulation as to the number of people who can enter the hall so it was 'one-out and one-in'. I think we waited for 45 mins till we were finally allowed to come into the warmth.

입구에서 돈을 내면 큰 맥주잔에 노란색 쿠폰을 넣어서 줘. 맥주잔은 내가 가져도 되고 쿠폰이 돈 역할을 하게되서 그걸루 맥주를 사면되. 처음으로 내 맥주잔이 생겨서 기뻤어!

Each of us are given a big pint glass with some yellow coupons in it and we get to keep the cup and buy beers with the coupons. (Later on we found out that they were out of those pint glasses and a lot of people did not receive any.) I am very pleased with my first pint glass from a beer festival!

맥주잔을 가지고 가서 사진 뒤에 있는 맥주를 조금씩 시음 해 보고 마시고 싶은걸 샀어. 내가 고른건 이 노퍽주에서 만들어진 노퍽 키위라는 에일과 쿠거(스폰서인 팻캣에서 양조됨), 그리고 사이다야. 알코올이 들어있는 사이다인데 마셔봐야 진가를 알수  있어. 사진과 말로 묘사하기 힘든게 아쉽네. 사람들로 북적거리는거 보이지?

Happy me with my pint glass! I tried Norfolk Kiwi which is very easy drinking bitter. I also tried Cougar(brewed by Fat Cat) and half a pint of lovely cider. You see how crowded it is inside?

배가 고파서 아래층에 내려가서 요기거리를 찾았어. 나는 핫도그를 먹었어. 간단하지만 정말 맛있더라구. 아래 사진이 스낵바 인데 사람들이 많아서 사진 잘 찍기가 힘들었어.

We were hungry by this time so we went downstairs to find some food. I had a lovely hotdog with a really good sausage. I am normally not a big fan of sausages but this one was good. Simple but very impressive! Below is a picture of the snack bar but it was hard to get a good snapshot as it was too crowded and I was not patient to wait.

혼자 사진도 찍고 서빙하는 할아버지랑도 사진 찍고 즐거운 시간 보냈어.
