다가오는 5월 5일 월요일이 뱅크 홀리데이야. 그래서 긴 주말을 즐길수 있다는 생각에 다들 설레어 해. 나는 긴 주말 이용해서 런던에 혼자 놀러가서 친구들 만나서 회포를 풀 예정이야. 우리나라는 그러고 보니 그날이 어린이 날이네.
The 5th May is a bank holiday so I am preparing myself for a long weekend in London. It is Children's Day on the 5th of May in Korea.
그래서, 오늘은 영국의 공휴일인 'Bank Holidays - 뱅크 홀리데이(직역하면 은행이 쉬는날이라고 해)' 에 대해서 이야기 해 볼께. 생소한 개념이지? 그냥 한국의 공휴일 개념이라고 이라고 보면 이해하기 쉽겠다.
Well, Bank Holiday is a very foreign concept to Koreans simply because we don't have them. So I would like to introduce this holiday to my friends and family in Korea and my blog visitors as well.
'뱅크 홀리데이(은행들이 쉬는날)'의 유래를 좀 살펴 보자면, 이 공휴일 동안은 은행들이 영업을 하지 않아서 회사들이 정상 영업을 할 수가 없어서 회사들도 덩달아 쉬게 되어서 뱅크 홀리데이라고 불리게 된거라고 해. 1871년 영국에서는 Bank Holiday Act(은행 휴일 법령)이 발효 되면서 부터 시작이 되었는데, 그 밖의 많은 휴일이 있었는데 이법이 개정이 되면서 부터 4개로 정리 되었다고 해.(참고로, 1834년 이전에는 33개의 종교관련 휴일과 축제가 있었고 1834년에 이게 4개로 축소되었어 - 5월 1일, 모든 성인의 날인 11월 1일, 굿 프라이데이, 크리스마스) 이 때 정해진 공휴일은 Easter Monday(부활절 다음 월요일), White Monday(성령 강림절 다음 월요일), 8월 첫번째 월요일(나중에 8월 마지막 월요일로 바뀜) 마지막으로 우리에게 널리 알려진 쇼핑을 위한 휴일 Boxing Day(12월 26일)이 이에 포함되었어.
Bank Holidays are days of the year when there is a general day off from work. A bank holiday is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Commonwealth countries, other European countries such as Switzerland, and a colloquialism for a public holiday in Ireland. There is no automatic right to time off on these days, although banks close and the majority of the working population is granted time off work or extra pay for working on these days, depending on their contract.[1] The first official bank holidays were the four days named in the Bank Holidays Act 1871....Prior to 1834, the Bank of England observed about 33 saints' days and religious festivals as holidays, but in 1834 this was reduced to four: 1 May (May Day), 1 November (All Saints Day), Good Friday, and Christmas Day. 현재에는, 1월 1일 새해(New Year's Day)와 May Day(5월 첫째주 월요일) 등이 추가되어서 총 8일이국가 공휴일(스코틀랜드 9일, 북아일랜드는 10일) 로 되어 있어. 이중에서 크리스마스와 성(聖) 금요일(부활절 전의 금요일. 예수가 십자가에 못 박힌 날을 기억하기 위한 날) 은 뱅크 홀리데이는 아니지만 관습법으로 정해진 휴일이라고 해. 뱅크 홀리데이가 유급휴가로 지정되어 있지는 않고 회사마다 규정에 따르게 되어 있다고 해.
There is currently a total of 8 permanent bank and public holidays in England, Wales and 9 for Scotland and 10 in Northern Ireland. These include Christmas Day and Good Friday, which in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are common law' holidays (they are not specified by law as bank holidays but have become customary holidays because of common observance). 위의 설명에서 보면 알 수 있듯이 날짜가 딱 정해져 있는게 아니라 '몇 월 몇째 주 무슨 요일' 식으로 정해져 있는 경우가 대다수야. 그리고 1월 1일 같이 날짜가 정확히 정해진 경우, 그리고 그날이 주말일 경우는 그 주말에 연결된 월요일에 쉴수 있도록 대체 휴일을 주기 때문에 우리나라처럼 날짜에 따라서 추석이나 설날의 휴일기간이 길거나 늘지 않더라구.
If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday.(https://www.gov.uk/bank-holidays) In Korea, our holidays are fixed by dates so the length of a holiday will depend on whether a holiday falls on a weekend or not.
One of the first things I do just before a new year in Korea would be to look at the next year's calendar to see which day the holidays fall on so I know how blessed or unfortunate I would be with my national holidays.
